Object’s Context | Context’s Object

2024

Lying at the core of our daily rituals, dishware became the focus of my undergraduate thesis as it ranges in value from cherished sentimental belongings to unappreciated items reduced to their base function. This project evolved into a study of objects in relation to their context and agency, with one plate becoming the primary subject. As designers, it is essential to recognize the transformative quality and relational conditions of objects by challenging conventional perceptions through radical treatments to garner new perspectives.

Staging Still Life’s

Object’s Context

Traditionally, an object’s context is how we attribute its value and meaning. Through a series of experimental still lifes, we repositioned the plate in different contexts to expose the rich multiplicities one object can hold.

Object Informed Spaces

Context’s Objects

In challenging this traditional dynamic, we began experimenting with an object shaping its context instead. Through the creation of radically different worlds that revolve around one plate, we can reposition an object’s agency to inform space and highlight its complexity.
